Forging ahead with major job-creating rail projects

08 October 2020

The Marshall Liberal Government is getting on with delivering important job-creating rail infrastructure projects for Adelaide’s north with works progressing on the Gawler Rail Electrification and Ovingham Level Crossing Removal projects.

Together these projects are creating around 355 jobs and will deliver better services for public transport users and safer travel for motorists.

Early survey investigation works are taking place this week as part of the design process for the $231 million Ovingham Level Crossing Project.

The project, which is jointly (50:50) funded by the Morrison and Marshall governments, involves the removal of the level crossing by elevating Torrens Road over the Gawler rail line.

The project will not only lead to improved safety for all road users by removing a road-rail conflict point, it will also create 105 jobs each year over the life of the project.

The Gawler Rail Electrification Project has also reached a new milestone with works now entering a more complex stage of delivery.

Temporary partial and full closures of the Gawler rail line are required between October 2020 and October 2021 to facilitate works for the project that cannot be safely undertaken with trains operating in the corridor.

Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Corey Wingard thanked passengers for their patience while these important works are being carried out.

“These temporary closures are necessary to deliver the long-awaited electrification of the Gawler rail line, which is supporting around 250 full-time equivalent jobs each year,” Minister Wingard said.

“Substitute buses have been organised to operate as closely as possible to existing train timetables throughout these closure periods.

“The closures are a sign we are achieving great progress on this important project, which forms part of the Marshall Government’s ongoing investment in public transport to deliver faster, safer, more reliable and more comfortable rail services.

“The electrified Gawler line will be a modern, environmentally friendly and efficient train service that will encourage more people to leave the car at home and take public transport.

“Once complete, the electrified line will support increased capacity and future economic opportunities for development along the rail corridor with projections indicating that up to an extra 1100 commuters from the northern suburbs will be able to catch the train during peak hour.
