Multiplex appointed to iconic new Sydney Fish Market Redevelopment

26 October 2020

Premier global construction company Multiplex has been appointed by the NSW State Government to deliver the long-awaited Sydney Fish Market redevelopment in Blackwattle Bay, expected to breathe new life into the world-class Sydney landmark.

Designed by Danish architect 3XN along with BVN and Aspect Studios, and located adjacent to the existing Fish Market in Pyrmont, the new Sydney Fish Market development will deliver over 6,000 square metres of new public space in a four-storey market hall setting.

It will comprise new restaurants, cafés, bars, fishmongers and specialty food retailers, as well as new public promenades, offices and commercial space and a ferry wharf. The new Sydney Fish Market is also set to deliver much needed upgraded technology including improved facilities to keep seafood fresher and allow for easier trade.

The innovative design of the new Sydney Fish Market includes a distinctive waveshaped and scale-patterned roof paying homage to the fishing industry. Another feature of the new design is a more visibly accessible auction area giving the visiting public a deeper understanding of the seafood supply chain.

“We are thrilled to be appointed to this iconic Sydney project and draw upon our extensive experience building submersed infrastructure. The redevelopment of the Sydney Fish Market is set to have a huge and positive impact on the local community as well as the fishing, construction and tourism industries and we couldn’t be more proud to help deliver this world-class development,” said David Ghannoum, Multiplex Regional Managing Director NSW.

Construction is set to commence in 2021 with completion due in 2024.

The new Sydney Fish Market redevelopment is expected to create approximately 700 jobs throughout construction and more than 700 on-going jobs once it opens in 2024.

Importantly, the existing Sydney Fish Market will continue to operate and trade without disruption while redevelopment works are undertaken.

Multiplex has established a strong collaborative relationship with architects 3XN and BVN, and is currently delivering their designs on Sydney’s Quay Quarter Tower.

The redevelopment is set to provide all new open public spaces that will allow shared pedestrian and cycle paths and waterfront access from Sydney Fish Market all the way to Woolloomooloo and improve access to nearby public transport links.

Sustainability will drive the project and Multiplex is aiming to achieve a 5-Star Green Star rating and is consulting with Australia’s leading marine habitat restoration specialists to identify ways to remove floating waste, improve water quality and enhance the recovery of marine life.

The existing Sydney Fish Market is the largest market of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere and the third largest seafood market, in terms of variety, in the world. The existing Sydney Fish Market sources product both nationally and internationally and trades over 13,500 tonnes of seafood annually.

Over the past 25 years, Multiplex has strong credentials building submerged infrastructure and has delivered some of Sydney’s most iconic waterfront precincts including Woolloomooloo Wharf, King Street Wharf, Jones Bay Wharf, Darling Island, Piers 6 and 7 Walsh Bay and Luna Park.
