Additional funding announced for Shellharbour Hospital

22 September 2020

The NSW Government has announced an additional $320 million from stimulus funding, on top of the current state funding of $251 million and Commonwealth funding $128 million, for the new Shellharbour Hospital to be built on a new site.

Building the new Shellharbour Hospital on a new site will provide for an expansion of outpatient services and elective surgical services, which will ease waiting list pressures across the region, provide contemporarily designed mental health facilities, improve transport links and future expansion opportunities.

Following further planning and consultation, the new hospital is expected to include services such as acute medical and surgical services, medical imaging, emergency department, mental health services, outpatient and ambulatory care and a multistorey car park.

The NSW Government has previously announced further funding of $23 million for a new multistorey car park. This project is set to provide a boost to the local economy, supporting up to 2,800 full-time direct annual jobs during construction.

The current Shellharbour Hospital will continue to operate until the new hospital is operational. The future use of the existing site will be determined once the new hospital has been built.

Construction timeframes will be confirmed once a site has been identified and planning is further progressed. It is expected that a site could be identified in 2021.
