New technical specifications on construction and maintenance of road assets

16 July 2020

Austroads has published four new technical specifications dealing with supply of assets and treatments used to extend the life of concrete in bridges.

“These specifications are part of a comprehensive suite of specifications for the construction of roads and bridges known as Austroads Technical Specifications. The Austroads Technical Specifications reflect contemporary construction practice and wherever possible, they are consistent with the relevant Australian and New Zealand standards,” said Ross Guppy, Austroads Program Manager, Assets.

Two specifications contain requirements for the supply of assets used in road or bridge construction and maintenance.

ATS 5420 sets out the requirements for the supply of bolts, nuts, screws, washers, studbolts and threaded rods for steelwork. This Specification also includes requirements for the supply of stainless steel fasteners.

Supply of Small Box Culverts (ATS 2230) provides information on supplying small, precast, reinforced, concrete rectangular box culverts, up to 1200 mm wide and 1200 mm high, and associated link slabs. This Specification includes information on correct storage and handling, and lifting equipment.

The other two specifications cover treatments that extend the durability of steel and concrete in bridge construction.

“ATS 5390 advises on the cathodic protection of steel to protect it from corrosion in atmospherically exposed, buried and submerged concrete,” said Richard Edwards, author. “It covers both new and existing structures and includes information on assessing existing structures to ensure cathodic protection and design are sound. It also includes the requirements for commissioning, installation and inspection.”

Waterproofing of Concrete Bridge Decks (ATS 5350) sets out the requirements for supplying materials and waterproofing membrane systems that are applied or bonded to new or existing concrete bridge decks. The specification is for both preformed sheet and liquid applied membranes, and includes information to be recorded in the Quality Plan including details of the equipment to be used and experience of the operators.

“These specifications will help improve standards for bridge and road construction and maintenance,” Ross Guppy said.
