Premier global construction company Multiplex has been appointed to deliver stage two early works for the new Liverpool Health and Academic Precinct, the $740 million redevelopment of the Liverpool Hospital in Sydney’s south-west.

The commencement of works marks the start of the hospital’s transformation into a world-class medical hub and one of NSW’s leading health precincts.

The works include the reconfiguration of existing car parks, a new kitchen facility, a new mortuary, helipad upgrades and a temporary education facility to enable the hospital to operate throughout the main works, which are expected to begin in 2021.

“We are thrilled to play a pivotal role in the early construction of the NSW Government’s redevelopment of Liverpool Hospital. Once complete, the Health and Academic Precinct will bring world-class medical and research facilities to Sydney’s south-west and is set to be a great contribution to our already phenomenal health sector,” said David Ghannoum, Regional Managing Director of Multiplex New South Wales.

Refurbishment works will also include construction of a new switch board room and special communications room. Major relocation of existing communication data cables will also be undertaken as part of the program.

Upon completion, the new Liverpool Health and Academic Precinct will bring enhanced ambulatory care and education and research facilities to the hospital, provide around 900 beds and almost double the current number of treatment spaces for chemotherapy.

The Precinct will also provide expanded services for women and children with 16 new birthing suites and a further 50 new beds across the neonatal intensive care unit and special care nursery.

Other key features include a bigger emergency department with a higher capacity for patients, a larger intensive care unit, more operating theatres and a new multi-storey car park with improved pick-up and drop-off points.

Multiplex has developed a strong reputation in the health sector and is the current contractor for the new $470 million Maitland Hospital in the Lower Hunter Valley region. Other recently completed hospital projects in New South Wales include the more than $1 billion Westmead Redevelopment, the St George Hospital Redevelopment in Kogarah, the South East Regional Hospital in Bega and the Byron Central Hospital.
